Ethernet over power cables

Another part of the house puzzle is that I want to have networking in the home without running cables everywhere, so I ordered some of the Netgear HDX101 Powerline HD Ethernet Adapters.

Wow am I impressed. Plug them in to a couple of wall sockets (preferably a couple of rooms apart of course), and then plug your Ethernet cable into the side. Done. It's that easy to get it set up.

I haven't tested the speed yet, but I haven't noticed things feeling particularly slow compared, say, to my 100MBps switch (the units work at 200MBps, effectively Full-Duplex Ethernet speed).

New house, new phones

Continuing on the new house theme for a moment, one of the other things we'll be changing about the house is our phone service.

Currently we have a more expensive monthly charge with our phone company (to get cheaper calls), but we're gonna move to the cheapest possible service (because we need a line for ADSL), and then we'll use Skype phones to make all or outgoing calls. In fact, we make outgoing calls very rarely, most calls are either people calling us or they are longer ones to parents/friends, many of which have Skype anyway.

I already use a Dualphone 3088, which I'm very happy with, but it doesn't yet support multiple handsets, a must for a phone system where we'll need a handset in each room, or at least enough handsets to go round.

Switching off the house

I've been off travelling again, and I must say that the light aspect to travelling (reduced load, few bags, and living with a restricted wardribe) help to focus the mind on where we waste materials and power. You can live economically if you have to, but as a rule we tend not to.

While I was away, my wife was dealing with the entire house buying process, which wrappd up on thursday after my return and signature. We move in at the end of the month, but we are already thinking about the running costs of the house while we think about setting up and organizing the various utilities to reconnect us and set up the accounts.
