Making the UK floods visual

If you hadn't seen the news, we've had some very serious flooding here in the UK. It's affected a nuber of different areas, from Tewkesbury and Gloucester in the west right through to Nottingham, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Hull, which bore the brunt of the first round of floods.

When flying back from holiday you could see the flooding near the airport - nothing like they have experienced in Hull and elsewhere, but it gave you a better idea of the effects of the flood waters. Without such a visual queue it is difficult to comprehend the effects.

The cause, unsurprisingly, was the heavy quantity of rain, but it can be difficult to get a really good idea of how much and where the rain fell so that you can understand and comprehend how it all happened.

Using Active Directory for heterogeneous authentication

Here's an interesting idea - as an alternative to running multiple different LDAP servers for your Linux authentication, why not just use Windows Active Directory instead?

This is something I've actually written about, and proposed before. If you already have a Windows Active Directory instance on your network (and many companies also Linux and Unix already will), why not take advantage of the directory service offered by AD.

Laser printers bad for your health

his, somewhat worrying, study explains that some laster printers are outputting a large number of particulates in the form of unused toner.

Those particles are precisely what you don't want if you have any sort of breathing condition, like asthma, or even, to be honest, if you don't.

According to the article, a large number of HP printers are in the list that output a high number of particulates. Laser printers were already known to output a lot of ozone, adding toner to the mix will not do them any favors.

Emacs 22 revives an editor favorite

There's a short, but sweet, review of the latest version of Emacs 22, the venerable and equally loved and loathed editor primarily for Linux and Unix like OS, but also available for Windows for those who can't do without it.

Those who are massive fans waited six years. I've been using the new version for the last month and I must say I'm pleased so far. I use barely 5% of the functionality, but I'm happy to say that I'd be pretty much lost without it.

For those of you who haven't used it yet, or who use it but don't feel you are getting enough out of it, there's a cool series at IBM developerworks on using the emacs editing environment.

Unsubscribing from spam and mailing lists

Like everybody I get a lot of spam emails, and having been away from the computer for a while, I seem to have a real glut of them at the moment. There are a bunch of rather repetitive ones that I cannot understand. I'm pretty sure we've all received a message offering the proof reading service.

I also seem to be on a few spam lists trying to sell me professional services or whitepapers. Unlike many, these spam emails come with an unsubscribe link, but the process seems a bit archaic. Without exception, every single one suggests a time of at least 5 days before I get of the list. That even applies to some professional mailing lists that I actually did subscribe too.
