Get your widgets ready, the Chumby is here

The Chumby, which I blogged about in November last year (Widgets for your desk, not your desktop) and the Chumby box is finally becoming available.

I think the Chumby has a lot of potential. Since November I thought up a bunch of widgets I'd love to deploy on these, from some simple clocks and counters, to context aware devices around the house that remind of things I need to do, like paint the guest room or fit the cupboard locks. I've also though about some date aware photo frames.

A Mac Mini is aleady a NAS drive

I just noticed this news snippet Turn your Mac mini into a NAS drive.

It's a box that stacks nicely with a Mac Mini and works as NAS storage. I think the principle of NAS storage is great, but surely if you already have a Mac Mini it would be easier (and cheaper) just to add an external USB drive and then share that?

Mac OS X includes file sharing support, for Mac, Windows, Unix (NFS) and FTP - the NAS only supports Samba (Windows) and FTP. A separate NAS box I can understand if you didn't want it near an existing computer, but if you are going to place the two together, then making use of what you already have would make more sense.

Going Dutch with Skype Prime

I'm an undercover languages fan. I'll be the first to admit that I'm terrible at speaking most languages (except maybe French and Spanish), but I can read and write in a fairly wide and diverse range, including Swahili (Habiri!) and Maori (Nau mai!). For me it's a hobby, but it has become incredibly useful in a company where the individuals are from such a wide range of countries. Even just being able to say good morning to someone in their native language can help break the ice a little.

For most businesses today, having foreign language speakers on your staff can make a big difference to how you treat and work with different countries.

Halo 3 is popular before it’s even available

In completely and utterly unsurprising news, Halo 3 FastestSelling PreOrdered Video Game in History.

There are more than 1 million pre-orders for the game and a little more than 6 weeks to go before it gets released. My order is somewhere within those million preorders, and it just so happens that I've got a few days break (purely by accident, I assure you) around that time. If you haven't ordered yours already (who not!?), check out this BBC hands on preview.
